Seeking Qualified Candidates for Interim Harris County Justice of the Peace

Dear Friend, 

The Harris County Justice of the Peace Precinct 7, Position 1 has recently been vacated and we need your help finding an interim justice of the peace. The Harris County Commissioners Court is accepting resumes for an interim Harris County Justice of the Peace Precinct 7, Position 1. The position is temporary and will end after the canvass of the General Election on November 6, when the winner of the position is announced and later takes the oath of office. 

Please note: The process of being on the ballot for the position is outside the authority of Commissioners Court. Each political party may nominate a candidate for the November 6 election by a convention of the precinct chairs representing the precincts located in Precinct 7. 

Job Description
The justice of the peace has jurisdiction over minor misdemeanor offenses (Class C) and in civil matters where the amount in controversy does not exceed $10,000. The justice of the peace can issue a variety of civil processes as well as arrest and search warrants. The justice of the peace also presides over small claims courts in actions for the recovery of money that does not exceed $10,000. The base salary is $132,768. 

Eligibility
1.  Be a United States citizen;
2.  Be 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election or on the date of appointment.
3. Have not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be:
          a.      totally mentally incapacitated; or
          b.      partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote;
4. Have not been finally convicted of a felony from which the person has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities;
5.  Have resided continuously in the state of Texas for 12 months and in the jurisdiction of Justice of the Peace, Precinct 7 for six months.
How to Apply

Step 2: Once a resume is received, the applicant's qualifications will be evaluated to determined best qualified. Based on best qualified, candidates may be referred to a selection committee for consideration and interview.  

Step 3: The selection committee will conduct interviews and make a recommendation to Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis. 

Step 4: Commissioner Ellis will nominate a candidate during the Harris County Commissioners Court meeting for final approval.
